The Greenbelt Community Church is preparing to host an extraordinary event called Empty Bowls. The Empty Bowls Project http://emptybowls.net is a coordinated effort to raise money to support food banks, soup kitchens, and other hunger-fighting organizations. Started in 1991, Empty Bowls has raised millions of dollars to fight hunger throughout the world.
How does it work? Potters create original ceramic bowls, and then serve a meal of soup and bread. In exchange for homemade soup, bread, and cookies, guests purchase a ticket for $12.00 and keep the empty bowl symbolizing hunger around the world. Members of Greenbelt Pottery Inc. have coordinated this event and created 200 beautiful ceramic bowls for an Empty Bowls event that is held at the Greenbelt Community Church on a Saturday evening.
Tickets are available at the Ceramic Studio in the Greenbelt Community Center on Wednesday and Thursday evenings between 7:30 and 9:30 pm or Sunday afternoons between 1:00 and 5:00 pm. Tickets are also sold at the church after worship. Tickets will be sold at the door only if there are any left. All proceeds will go to Help by Phone. Help by Phone runs eight emergency food pantries in Prince Georges County. Entirely run by volunteers, the organization helps between 60 to 70 thousand needy county residents every year.
So come to the church for delicious homemade soups, bread and cookies. Choose your favorite bowl from 200 beautifully crafted ones made by local potters.
